SFI Instructions and Requirements

To Register
You can register online, by fax, or phone with credit card; or register by mail with check or credit card.  We cannot hold reservation without payment. A separate registration form is required for each participant.  You may call (559) 565-4251 or email: sfi@sequoiahistory.org for additional information.

Payment

Check or credit card payable when reservation is made. Payment is processed upon receipt.


Class Information Packet

You will receive a course itinerary by mail or email.

Food and Transportation
Participants are responsible for their own food, lodging, and transportation except where otherwise indicated.  Shuttle services now available are: Visalia's Sequoia Shuttle, Sequoia National Park Shuttle, and the Sequoia Sightseeing Tours.

Cancellation Policy
You may cancel up to 30 days in advance to receive a refund (minus $20 processing fee per program/person or you may opt for full credit toward a future seminar. No credits or refunds will be made on cancellations after the 30-day deadline. We regret that no exceptions can be made, even for medical reasons. If we cancel a class you will get a full refund.

Weather
Classes are held rain or shine. Programs are held at the mercy of mother nature. We recommend you carry weatherproof clothing and be prepared for weather changes even in summer. We reserve the right to change trip itinerary. We can't guarantee completion of any trip. Tire chains may be required. Park recorded road/weather info (559) 565-3134.

Travel Insurance
We recommend, especially for multi-day programs, purchasing  travel insurance that covers trip cancellation and emergency medical transportation. Trip cancellation insurance can be found online or from a travel agent.

Physical and Experience Requirements
Participants must be in good physical condition. Most seminars involve hiking at elevations over 6,000 ft. Day hikes range from two to ten miles. Read course descriptions carefully and only sign up for classes that fit your  fitness and experience level.
 

Safety
While every effort is made to prevent mishaps, you must assume full responsibility for your own safety and provide your own health and accident insurance. Courses my take place in remote wilderness locations.


Entrance Fee
Participants must pay an entrance fee to enter Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Age Requirements
Many classes are geared toward participants 12 years of age and older. Age limits are included in each course description. Children under 16 must usually be accompanied by an adult.

Black Bears
Bear canisters for storing food on backpacking trips are strongly recommended and required by Park Service regulation in some areas. For rental or purchase information call SNHA (559) 565-3759. Do not leave food in your vehicle

Equipment Needs
You must provide your own camping gear and food unless otherwise stated in the course description.

Lodging and Camping
Make reservations early as rooms and campsites do fill in the summer and in the winter on weekends.

Camping
To reserve a campsite at Lodgepole or Dorst Campground, call 1-800-365-2267. All other campgrounds are on first-come, first-served. No RV hook-ups in the parks. Shower and laundry facilities at Grant Grove and Lodgepole.

 Other Requirements/Information

  • Pets are not permitted on seminars.
  • Participants must pay a park entrance fee when entering, currently $20/car, good for 7 days. Annual pass is $30.
  • Upon entering the park please read the newspaper-visitor guide provided at the entrance station. It includes important park travel and safety information.
  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • Class sizes range from 8 to 20 people. Smaller classes fill very fast. 
  • Seminar instructors and itinerary subject to change.
