7/18/2013 Natural History of the Tablelands Backpack Begins This moderately strenuous backpack trip introduces us to one of the park’s most beloved areas. A feeling of safe remoteness is one of the defining features of this long weekend getaway. The first night camping at Lodgepole campground will acclimate us to higher elevation and will give us time to get to know our group. The second day, we don our backpacks for 7 mile walk in to set up a high country campsite perched above Pear Lake. On the third day our layover day, we cross country hike to the highest point in the area at 11,485’. From Alta Peak it seems our eyes and imaginations could travel forever! Day four, we pack up and hike back to the trailhead. Your backpacking guide, Rick, enjoys park history, wildflowers, photography and appreciates a good high country lake. You’ll be in great hands! Approximate daily mileage 7. Ages: 16 and over. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. 7/25/2013 Exploring the Kings/Kaweah Backpack Begins This backpack itinerary will provide a great introduction to two scenic wonders, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. On Thursday meet the group, rearrange your gear, and get comfortably acclimated at the Lodgepole campground. Friday’s destination is Nine Mile Creek, the perfect compromise between a day too long and a day too short. The High Sierra Trail is a piece of park history that is not to be rushed. It has breathtaking vistas and welcoming twists and turns. Saturday will find you bound for Tamarack Lake junction. From here you’ll be able to enjoy a great night sky. On Sunday, head into Deadman Canyon via the popular Elizabeth Pass. Monday will find you visiting the Roaring River Ranger station and then on to Sugarloaf Crossing for a satisfying night’s sleep. Tuesday cross Sugarloaf Valley to Comanche Meadow for a glorious night under the stars at Ranger Lake. Wednesday’s hike home up and over Silliman Pass, through Cahoon Gap back to Lodgepole is just as diverse and scenic as all the others! Have you ever contemplated the mysteries of the universe or wondered what other constellations you can see besides the Big Dipper? Do you want to impress your friends next time you find yourselves under the incredible blanket of stars? Then perhaps you should join Sequoia sky ranger, Tara Hostnik, on a unique backpacking trip to the Tablelands, an alpine paradise with open sky into which many hikers rarely venture. This trip will highlight the night sky, teaching participants the basics of backyard astronomy using the naked eye and powerful binoculars. Become familiar with more advanced deep sky objects, such as popular summer star clusters and nebulae that fascinate advanced astronomers. This 4-day, 3-night adventure will certainly be a memorable experience as you leave with a new appreciation for astronomy and stars seen from one of the best night skies in California! 8/6/2013 Middle Fork Kings River Backpack Begins This is a great opportunity for a backpacking exploration of the northwestern portion of Kings Canyon National Park. Meet your group on Tuesday evening in Cedar Grove. Wednesday morning the EdVenture begins after a van ride to your trailhead and your second night of acclimating. Thursday morning hike to gorgeous Crown Valley and spend your first night in the true wilderness. Friday hike down into Tehipite Valley sometimes called a hidden Yosemite! On Saturday, hike up the Middle Fork of the Kings River to Simpson Meadow to spend two nights. Sunday enjoy a layover day to hike to the upper section of the Middle Fork of the Kings, or just enjoy a day in camp, reading a good book. Monday you will be back on the trail to spend the night at Lake of the Fallen Moon. Tuesday you will be on your way to Volcanic Lakes. On Wednesday you’ll hike around Dead Pine Ridge and over Kennedy Pass to your campsite. On Thursday enjoy the splendid views as you make your final decent down Lewis Creek trail to your vehicles. Participate in a museum scavenger hunt, adjust your eyes to the darkness and experience the nocturnal world in the Giant Forest, listen to bedtime stories from living history character Alice Eastwood, and wake up early to witness a beautiful sunrise on top of Beetle Rock. It even served as a winter home for a group of Civilian Conservation Corps workers, who were building trails inside. Of course, the cave has hosted many explorers through the centuries, from Native peoples to National Park Service personnel. Do the spirits of these past visitors still linger and roam the cave's marble passageways? This one hour long tour will stop in beautiful cave rooms and along the way we'll meet the "ghosts" of Crystal Cave's past. Ages: 8 years old and older Cost: $20 per person Tickets must be purchased at the Foothills or Lodgepole Visitor Center
